Mayfair Door Restoration – Working with Large Wooden Doors
Original features are at the very heart of a heritage property. Unfortunately, many property owners rush to replace period features when age starts to take its toll. At Fortis & Hooke, we think there is a better way.
Some period properties are lucky enough to feature large wooden doors. However, given their size, it can be difficult for some companies to properly repair, restore and protect these charming fixtures. Not for Fortis & Hooke.
Our team were contacted by a property owner in Mayfair, about a large wooden door which had become visibly worn. Needless to say, the owner was concerned about its impact on the property’s kerb appeal – not to mention the damage to the original timber where paint was beginning to deteriorate.
Rather than dismissing it as an unsolvable problem for doors of its size, we went above and beyond to provide a long-lasting solution. Keep reading to see how we completed a full restoration for the door.
MAINTAINING VALUE WITH ORIGINAL FEATURES
With a number of historical estates, Mayfair is home to some of the finest examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture and design. Most of this remains in modern London, with property owners keen to preserve their original features and maintain the appeal and value of their homes.
The same concern was held by our customer in West London. On inspection, it was clear their door had become distressed over the years, leaving it vulnerable to the elements to say the least. Without action, the wood could have suffered from water ingress, swelling and even decay.
A PROMPT RESTORATION
While other companies may attempt to complete repairs in situ, we know that a high-quality restoration requires the right space and environment – especially for a door of its size. Our team safely removed the door from the property, replacing it with a bespoke replica for the time being. This kept the property secure and minimised disruption while we completed the restoration process.
Removing the door also gave our team better access to the frame, which was another concern for the customer. Without attention, it could have impaired the property’s security, creating unnecessary worries for our customer.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PAINT PROTECTION
A focal point of this restoration was the paint protection on the door and its frame. To provide a true long-lasting solution, both the door and frame needed to be completely stripped of existing paint. This also gave our customer the opportunity to choose the perfect colour for their property’s crowning feature.
Our team expertly hand-painted both the door and the frame in our customer’s colour of choice: eggshell white for the internal door and frame, with Dulux Weathershield Exterior Gloss in white and black for the external frame and door, respectively.
Our expert choice of products and precise hand-painting ensures the door will continue to impress and function perfectly for several years. However, we also provided a ten-year warranty, so our customer can rest assured their door is covered for a decade at the very least.
