Door Restoration in Wandsworth – Repairing a Cracked Door
Original features are at the very heart of a heritage property. Unfortunately, many property owners rush to replace period features when age starts to take its toll. At Fortis & Hooke, we think there is a better way.
We’re all aware how a chipped windshield on your car can develop into something more series. The same is true for a cracked door. Any homeowner who notices a fracture in their own door’s infrastructure would be well advised to seek immediate professional help. Thankfully, that’s exactly what our conscientious client in Wandsworth took it upon themselves to do.
By nipping the issue in the bud, the customer was able to avoid moisture from outside permeating the timber and compromising its condition any further. After contacting Fortis & Hooke for a prompt restoration job, we were able to replace the offending panel, re-strengthen the rest of the door and return it to the client looking more impressive than ever.
INSPECTING THE DAMAGE
Our team was first contacted by the customer regarding the front door of their property in Wandsworth, London. One of the lower panels had suffered an extensive crack running down its length. The customer was concerned that if the situation was not addressed soon, the problem could spread to other parts of the door. They were correct in their assumptions.
As well as repairing the broken panel, the door also required a comprehensive restoration package, given that the timber was looked fatigued and the paintwork jaded. This extended not just to the door itself, but also the adjoining fanlight, side window and surrounding frame. Having assessed the situation, our team ascertained that our bespoke Longaevitas process was just what the doctor ordered to restore this door back to its former brilliance.
ESSENTIAL REPAIRS
Our first duty was to carefully remove the door from its hinges and replace it with a temporary wooden alternate, which would satisfy the basic needs of the homeowner while the work was being carried out. This is standard practice on any project of this kind, since it serves a double purpose. On the one hand, it allows us to devote the time, care and attention that the project needs to provide impeccable service, while on the other it causes minimal disruption to the homeowner’s routine.
Once we had the door in our workshop, we set to the task of bringing back its je ne sais quoi. Firstly, this involved addressing the client’s primary concern by having our joinery team replace the cracked panel. Then it was a case of stripping the existing paint from the wood, strengthening the integrity of the timber, treating it to another coat of the same coloured paint and finishing it with draught-sealing properties. Voila! She is ready to go.
STUNNING RESULTS
While other door restoration companies might have answered this client’s call and simply replaced the cracked panel which had been their main cause of concern, Fortis & Hooke once again went above and beyond to deliver exceptional service. As well as completely refurbishing the door itself, we also hand-painted the surrounding infrastructure of the entryway, resulting in a stunning aesthetic outcome for the client.
Not only have we added years of life to the original door, retaining the building’s traditional charm for another generation to enjoy, but we have upgraded the current appeal of the door to match the surrounding splendour in the neighbourhood. Another job well done!
