A breath of fresh air
2017 is set to bring some new colours, styles, and textures into our homes. But it’s not so much a case of “new year, new me”; 2017 is cherry picking the best of the recent trends and making them fresh and relevant.
Last year’s obsession with thick, heavy textures remains, but there are new players in the mix. Australian interior designer Darren Palmer suggests cork as the go-to material for adding texture and warmth to your interior design scheme in 2017.
Similarly, he says that Scandi is on its way out, but not right out of the door. Hygge – the Danish love of all things familiar and comfortable – will be given a more traditional refinement. Gone are the overdone schemes with chunky knit blankets, candle lighting and cocoa by the fire (even if nobody asked for it).
Going green
One trend that’s fairly new to us is the emergence of green as a statement accent colour. According to Vogue, 2017 will be full of green tones. Whether it’s a soft pastel green, or a bold, brash lime, green is worth including in your home’s design scheme. Don’t worry; you don’t have to go all out to get on board. Some green cushions or throws can give you a little burst of on-trend style.
Influential fabric and wallpaper designers Sanderson have created a number of collections with floral and leafy green inspiration. Their Waterperry wallpapers, Bay Willow weaves, and Arley plains are the epitome of floral’s latest reincarnation.
Escapism
With technology becoming more an inescapable part of modern life, 2017 interior design also reflects a desire for the humble retreat. Homes are becoming quainter, with traditional features being restored and focussed on. Homeowners who were previously frustrated by the odd shaping of their period home can now embrace it. Little nooks can become beautiful private spaces with the addition of some personal items and a comfortable place to sit.
